12th Silk Road Film Festival Lights Up Fuzhou

Fuzhou, in Fujian Province on the Chinese mainland’s southeast coast, is buzzing with cinematic energy as the 12th Silk Road International Film Festival kicked off on September 22. Under the theme "Silk Road Connects the World, Film Festival Illuminates Fuzhou," this five-day cultural feast invites young global citizens, filmmakers, and travelers to explore the intersection of storytelling and heritage.

Running through September 26, the festival features 12 main events that blend industry showcases with immersive experiences:

  • Golden Silk Road Awards ceremony
  • International screenings from 125 countries and regions
  • Outdoor open-air movie nights along Fuzhou’s riverside

With over 2,800 submissions — a record haul — including 1,850 films from Belt and Road partner countries, this year’s lineup is the most diverse yet. A 13-member jury of Chinese and international filmmakers, led by director Chen Kaige, will select winners across 10 categories, from Best Film to Best Director.

To celebrate the region’s cultural tapestry, Chinese actors Xu Ruohan and Xia Zhiguang and Cambodian Princess Norodom Jenna are serving as festival ambassadors. They’ll guide tours of Fuzhou’s historic sites and host interactive workshops, giving attendees a behind-the-scenes look at local traditions and modern creativity.

On September 26, the spotlight turns to local talents during a film exchange event. Seven major projects produced in Fujian will be showcased, offering industry reps a chance to connect with the makers driving China’s burgeoning film scene.

For film buffs, tech enthusiasts, and sustainability-minded travelers alike, the 12th Silk Road International Film Festival in Fuzhou offers more than just movies — it’s a living, breathing hub of global culture and collaboration.
