Hangzhou to Host UNESCO’s 5th World Congress of Biosphere Reserves

Hangzhou, capital of Zhejiang Province on the Chinese mainland, is set to welcome UNESCO’s 5th World Congress of Biosphere Reserves (WCBR) from September 22 to 25. This decennial gathering marks the first time the event takes place in Asia, shining a global spotlight on the intersection of biodiversity, culture and innovation.

At a press briefing by the State Council Information Office, He Hongping, vice president of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, highlighted that some 4,000 delegates will converge in Hangzhou. Participants represent over 150 countries and regions, from researchers and policymakers to sustainability pioneers.

Over four days, attendees will explore data-driven strategies to protect ecosystems and advance sustainable development. The congress will feature dynamic exchanges on topics ranging from climate resilience to community-led conservation – all aimed at forging real-world impact.

Beyond the conference halls, Hangzhou’s blend of high-tech innovation and eco-conscious culture offers a living laboratory for delegates. From the serene West Lake to cutting-edge tech hubs, the city invites young global citizens, entrepreneurs and digital nomads to experience immersive sustainability first-hand.

As the world faces mounting environmental challenges, UNESCO’s 5th WCBR in Hangzhou promises to unite a new generation of changemakers. By sharing fresh perspectives and forging cross-border collaborations, this congress could shape the next decade of global conservation.
