Under the UN flag, known as the Blue Helmets, a team of engineers from China’s Multi-Role Engineering Unit is embarking on one of the world’s most daunting demining missions in southern Lebanon.
At the heart of the operation is Qing Shenghe, whose daily routine reads like a high-stakes ballet. With frontlines shifting unpredictably, minefields hide in former battle zones, turning routine patrols into life-or-death encounters.
“Every step feels like dancing on a knife’s edge,” Qing says, as he calibrates his detector and scans the rocky terrain. His unit relies on helmets, shields, and meticulous mapping techniques to mark safe corridors—but no amount of preparation can erase the risk.
The team’s work goes beyond clearing explosives. By opening paths through once-locked areas, they help restore critical supply routes, support local farmers, and rebuild trust between communities torn apart by conflict.
Despite the constant danger, Qing and his colleagues draw strength from their shared purpose: to turn war-scarred land into safe ground. Each cleared field marks a victory for peace and a testament to human resilience on the world stage.
