Robot Surgeons at CIFTIS: Is AI Ready for the Operating Room?

As the 2025 China International Fair for Trade in Services (CIFTIS) ramps up in Beijing, one of the week’s hottest attractions is not a new trade deal but a series of AI-powered robotic arms stepping into the operating room.

CGTN reporter Chen Chen walked the healthcare section on Thursday and found prototypes performing simulated bone drills and abdominal incisions, each movement guided by advanced algorithms. Exhibitors at the fair say these robots are already at work in hospitals across the Chinese mainland, offering higher precision, improved safety and faster recovery times compared with traditional procedures.

A recent article in the journal Nature put robotic surgery under the microscope, concluding that blending human judgment with machine accuracy could revolutionize interventional medicine. Yet visitors at CIFTIS are still weighing the pros and cons: many see the tech as medicine’s next frontier, while others admit they’re not ready to be among the “early birds.”

Robot-assisted surgery may be coming to a hospital near you—but would you be the first to schedule your procedure with a robotic arm?
