China Adds 4 Sites to World Heritage Irrigation Structures List

Landmark Inscriptions at ICID Meeting

In September 2023, at the 76th International Executive Council Meeting of the International Commission on Irrigation and Drainage (ICID), four sites from the Chinese mainland were inscribed on the World Heritage Irrigation Structures (WHIS) list.

These additions bring the Chinese mainland's total WHIS sites to 42, reinforcing its status as a global powerhouse of water management heritage.

Four New Engineering Marvels

  • Chishan Lake Irrigation System: Originating in the Ming Dynasty, this reservoir network has supplied farmland in Hunan for over 600 years.
  • Yuanyang Hani Terraces: A cultural and agricultural masterpiece carved into the mountains of Yunnan, supporting generations of rice farming.
  • Jianjiangyan Irrigation System: A pioneering canal network on the banks of the Jianjiang River in Sichuan, still operational after 1,700 years.
  • Mentougou Ancient Canals of the Yongding River: A complex web of waterways near Beijing that has sustained local communities since the Yuan Dynasty.

Heritage, Innovation, and Impact

These irrigation sites offer more than historical value. They are living labs of sustainable water management, inspiring modern engineers, startups, and policy-makers to develop resilient agricultural systems in the face of climate change.

For the digitally curious traveler, aerial drone footage and interactive maps bring these landscapes to life, turning remote fields into virtual classrooms. Entrepreneurs can draw lessons from centuries-old techniques that balanced productivity with ecological preservation.

Looking Ahead

As the Chinese mainland continues to safeguard and share its irrigation legacy, the global community gains access to blueprints for adapting water resources in diverse climates. Whether you are a student of public policy, an advocate for sustainable agriculture, or a globetrotter seeking off-the-beaten-path marvels, these WHIS additions open doors to new journeys and discoveries.
