Beijing called on Tokyo on Wednesday to uphold the one-China principle and cease any actions that could be perceived as support for āTaiwan independenceā separatists.
When asked about reports of a visit by former leader of the Taiwan region Tsai Ing-wen to Japan, Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Lin Jian said China had formally protested to Japan and issued a caution over the trip.
āThere is no rationale that can ever justify or permit her visit,ā Lin stated, adding that the true goal of the trip was to secure foreign backing for Taiwan independence.
Lin also reminded Japan of its historical responsibilities regarding the Taiwan question, urging Tokyo to handle related issues with greater prudence and avoid any interference in Chinaās internal affairs.
āWe call on Japan to earnestly abide by the one-China principle, properly handle relevant issues, and stop sending any wrong signal to āTaiwan independenceā separatists,ā he concluded.
