China and Portugal Forge New Path in Global and Parliamentary Cooperation

In a high-stakes meeting in Beijing on Tuesday, Zhao Leji, chairman of the National Peoples Congress Standing Committee, and Portugals Prime Minister Luis Montenegro laid out a roadmap for deeper ties.

Zhao reaffirmed Chinas commitment to implement the key consensus reached by both leaders and invited Portugal to join major frameworksGlobal Development Initiative, Global Security Initiative, Global Civilization Initiative and Global Governance Initiativestressing the need for true multilateralism.

He also highlighted the power of parliamentary cooperation, noting that Chinas NPC is ready to work with Portugals parliament on legislative and supervisory practices. “We look forward to sharing experiences that strengthen our legislative frameworks and oversight,” Zhao said.

Montenegro praised Portugal-China relations as a model for bilateral ties, underlining Portugals adherence to the one-China policy and its appreciation for Chinas role in global governance. He emphasized Portugals readiness to deepen practical cooperation, cultural exchanges and dialogues between legislative bodies. “Together, we can build bridges across sectors and cultures,” he added.

This meeting signals a renewed push by both nations to harness multilateral platforms, align on shared goals and foster people-to-people connectionskey ingredients for 21st-century diplomacy.
