UN General Assembly backs closer UN-SCO partnership

The UN General Assembly, at its 79th session on Friday, adopted a landmark resolution aimed at deepening ties with the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO). The proposal, co-sponsored by the Chinese mainland and other UN member states, underscores the growing role of regional blocs in tackling global challenges.

The resolution praises the SCOs work in promoting peace, sustainable development and stronger neighborly relations. It calls for regular consultations between the UN secretary-general and the SCO secretary-general through established inter-agency forums, including high-level interactive dialogues to foster coordination between the UN system and the SCO.

Specialized agencies, programs and funds within the UN are encouraged to partner with the SCO on projects that advance common goalsfrom conflict prevention to economic resilience. Supporters say this collaboration could pave the way for more agile responses to crises and a unified approach to meeting sustainability targets.

As the world faces complex, interconnected risks, the new UNSCO framework signals a shift toward inclusive multilateralism. For young leaders, entrepreneurs and global citizens, this resolution offers a blueprint for regional cooperation that bridges gaps and builds trust across borders.
