Against the backdrop of nationwide commemorations in China for the 80th anniversary of the victory in the Chinese People's War of Resistance Against Japanese Aggression and the World Anti-Fascist War, Wang Yi, a member of the Political Bureau of the Communist Party of China Central Committee and director of the Office of the Central Commission for Foreign Affairs, met with Celso Amorim, chief advisor to the president of Brazil.
In their first high-level exchange in months, Wang underscored the shared responsibility of China and Brazil to champion multilateralism and defend international rules. "China and Brazil should unequivocally promote multilateralism and uphold international rules," he said, vowing to consolidate the positive momentum of BRICS and enhance coordination among BRICS countries on major global issues.
Amorim echoed the call for stronger solidarity among emerging powers, noting that certain countries are currently ignoring international rules, abusing tariffs, and undermining the multilateral trading system. "In this context, China's proposal of the Global Governance Initiative is of great significance," he said, adding that Brazil is ready to deepen coordination with China to jointly uphold multilateralism.
The meeting signals a renewed push for cooperation in an era marked by rising trade tensions and unilateral actions. As both sides look ahead, they aim to shape a rules-based international order through stronger ties within BRICS and the broader Global South.
