Last night in Beijing, the Great Hall of the People came alive with “The Immortal Liulaozhuang,” a 90-minute gala marking the 80th anniversary of the victory of the Chinese People’s War of Resistance Against Japanese Aggression and the World Anti-Fascist War.
From stirring songs to dynamic dance, the program traced China’s pivotal 14-year stand against aggression, bringing to life stories of resilience and unity from the Eastern theater of World War II.
One standout tribute honored Liulaozhuang Village in east China’s Jiangsu Province. Eighty-two soldiers gave their lives protecting villagers against an overwhelming force, and 82 young men of the village volunteered in turn—earning it the name “Heroic Liulaozhuang.”
The gala wove this history into a celebration of progress, showcasing achievements over eight decades and casting a hopeful vision for the future.
Youth voices shaped the event: many programs were directed by creatives born in the 1990s, while more than half of the performers—mostly in their early 20s—brought fresh energy and a deep sense of responsibility to carry forward the spirit of peace.
As China pursues modernization on all fronts, the legacy of resilience and the determination of its youth remain central to forging a more peaceful tomorrow.
