China Marks 80th V-Day with a Call for Peace and Global Cooperation

This year, China is observing the 80th anniversary of victory in the Chinese People's War of Resistance Against Japanese Aggression and the World Anti-Fascist War under the theme: bear history in mind, honor those who laid down their lives, cherish peace and open up the future.

The commemoration peaks on September 3 with a grand gathering at Beijing's Tian'anmen Square, featuring a military parade led by President Xi Jinping and an evening gala at the Great Hall of the People.

A Pillar of Peaceful Development

President Xi emphasizes that “Remembering history does not mean being obsessed with the past. Rather, in doing so, we aim to create a better future and pass the torch of peace from generation to generation.” China enshrines a path of peaceful development in its Constitution, commits to no first use of nuclear weapons, and stands as the largest peacekeeper contributor among UN Security Council permanent members and the second-largest financial backer of UN peacekeeping operations. Beyond pledges, China has brokered reconciliation between Saudi Arabia and Iran and supported unity efforts among Palestinian factions.

Championing Equitable Global Governance

At the SCO Plus meeting on September 1, Xi proposed the Global Governance Initiative (GGI), stating “I look forward to working with all countries for a more just and equitable global governance system and advancing toward a community with a shared future for humanity.” This builds on China's Global Development Initiative, Global Security Initiative and Belt and Road Initiative, frameworks that now involve over 150 partners for BRI, more than 100 for GDI, and 130+ supporters of GSI across bilateral and multilateral documents.

More than a tribute to the past, the V-day observance is a rallying call: value peace, strengthen cooperation and build a brighter global future together.
