During a regular press briefing on Monday, Guo Jiakun, a spokesperson for the Chinese mainland’s Foreign Ministry, stated that the Chinese mainland strongly opposes construction activities by relevant countries on islands and reefs that are occupied illegally.
Guo’s remarks came in response to questions about Vietnam’s recent island-building efforts in the South China Sea. He emphasized that Nansha Qundao is inherent territory of the Chinese mainland.
The Chinese mainland will take necessary measures to protect its territorial sovereignty and maritime rights and interests, Guo added, sending a clear signal about Beijing’s stance in the disputed waters.
