Recall vote in Taiwan region spells doom for ‘independence’ separatism

The Chinese mainland spokesperson declared on Sunday that the results of the second-round recall vote in the Taiwan region highlight a clear rejection of 'Taiwan independence' separatism.

Held on Saturday, the rare second round targeted seven legislators from the Kuomintang, but none of the recall proposals passed. This outcome marks another sweeping victory for the Kuomintang, strengthening its position against the recall campaign.

Despite the Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) drive, the party still holds 51 out of 113 seats in the island's legislature after two unsuccessful recall attempts.

“Following the first round of voting on July 26, the residents of Taiwan have once again said ‘no’ to the DPP’s malicious political farce,” said Zhu Fenglian, spokesperson for the State Council Taiwan Affairs Office, at a press conference. She added that any form of 'Taiwan independence' separatism runs against the will of the residents of Taiwan and is doomed to fail.

Observers say the vote underscores the resilience of mainstream voices in the Taiwan region and offers insight into the electorate’s stance on cross-strait relations.

Global watchers have noted that the decisive outcome could shape the next legislative cycle and influence business and policy decisions across the region.
