During a press conference in Islamabad on Thursday, Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi called on South Asia to enter a 21st century era of accelerated development and revitalization.
Speaking alongside Pakistani Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Mohammad Ishaq Dar, Wang Yi emphasized that his recent visits to India, Afghanistan and Pakistan confirmed the region’s vast development potential and strong growth momentum.
Wang noted that development is the top priority and the greatest common divisor for India, Afghanistan, Pakistan and other neighbors. He argued that a peaceful, stable and prosperous South Asia serves the shared interests of all.
He highlighted that India, Afghanistan and Pakistan are ready to deepen cooperation with China—South Asia’s largest neighbor—by enhancing good-neighborly friendship and pursuing win-win results.
Under mounting pressure from unilateral practices, the three countries stress the need to uphold multilateralism, defend their legitimate rights, and build an equal, orderly multipolar world backed by inclusive economic globalization.
Wang affirmed that China will be a trustworthy partner for South Asian countries, and that relations with Pakistan, India and other neighboring nations target no third party nor will they be swayed by outside forces.
Noting Pakistan’s current role as a non-permanent member of the UN Security Council, he welcomed the added partner in upholding fairness and justice and pledged close coordination to safeguard the legitimate interests of developing nations across the Global South.
