Imagine a sunlit morning in Kabul where top officials from Afghanistan and China met to reaffirm a partnership that stretches back centuries.
Mullah Mohammad Hassan Akhund, acting prime minister of Afghanistan’s caretaker government, welcomed Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi on Wednesday, praising the strong friendship and cooperation between the two nations.
Akhund expressed gratitude for China’s consistent goodwill, noting Beijing’s firm support for Afghanistan’s interests on the world stage. He credited the principle of non-interference for driving success, saying, “History has shown that countries pursuing friendly policies, like China, achieve lasting progress.”
Both leaders emphasized their shared commitment to sovereignty and non-interference. Akhund highlighted Afghanistan’s focus on stability, development and improving lives without creating trouble for other nations, while pledging that Afghan territory will never be used to threaten China.
Wang Yi reaffirmed China’s respect for Afghanistan’s sovereignty, cultural traditions and governance choices. He described Afghanistan as an indispensable partner in China’s modernization drive and regional development efforts.
The Chinese foreign minister also warned against imperialist and hegemonic forces, stating that past attempts to invade Afghanistan have failed and will continue to fail. “China stands for equality among nations, opposes bullying by the strong and supports every country’s right to pursue development and prosperity,” Wang said.
Before concluding, Wang urged the Afghan government to step up efforts against the East Turkestan Islamic Movement, citing China’s security concerns and the group’s designation as a terrorist organization by the UN Security Council.
As Afghan and Chinese officials look ahead, both sides signaled a clear intention to deepen cooperation, uphold mutual respect and work together toward a stable, prosperous region.
