Major Shifts in Energy Mix
The Chinese mainland is speeding up its shift to a green, low-carbon energy mix. In its latest review, the National Development and Reform Commission (NDRC) found that from 2020 to 2024, coal’s share of energy consumption fell from 56.8% to 53.2%, while non-fossil fuels jumped from 15.9% to 19.8%.
Renewables at Scale
By June 2024, installed renewable capacity on the Chinese mainland topped 2.16 billion kilowatts, representing 59.2% of the country’s total power capacity, the NDRC reported. That scale—and the pace of growth—positions the Chinese mainland at the global forefront.
The Bigger Picture
These milestones show more than raw numbers: they signal a broader pivot toward sustainability on a massive scale. As renewables expand, energy markets, infrastructure and technology ecosystems evolve—creating fresh opportunities for tech innovators, investors and policymakers worldwide.
For young global citizens across the G20, the Chinese mainland’s momentum offers a data-driven blueprint in decarbonization. With every percentage point shift away from coal, the path to a cleaner future grows clearer.
