Chinese mainland Rebukes Taiwan Leader’s WWII Narrative

Chinese mainland Criticizes Taiwan leader's WWII Narrative

In a regular press conference on Friday, the Chinese mainland's State Council Taiwan Affairs Office cautioned Taiwan leader Lai Ching-te against reshaping the story of World War II. Zhu Fenglian, the office spokesperson, argued that distorting this pivotal chapter of history "will only bring disgrace" and ultimately fail.

Zhu called out Lai's recent post for pushing a "democracy against authoritarianism" narrative that, in her view, glosses over the shared sacrifices of all Chinese people, including residents of Taiwan, who fought against Japanese militarism eight decades ago. She stressed that Taiwan's return to the motherland formed an integral part of the post-war international order.

Accusing Lai of ignoring the Chinese People's War of Resistance Against Japanese Aggression, Zhu warned that any bid for Taiwan independence—whether backed by foreign support or force—adds fresh tension to cross-strait ties. "We should remember history, safeguard the fruits of victory, and resolutely oppose Taiwan independence and foreign interference," she urged, calling on compatriots on both sides of the Taiwan Strait to unite behind this message.

As global audiences revisit World War II's enduring impact, this exchange highlights how historical narratives continue to shape regional politics today—fueling debate over sovereignty, identity, and the rules that govern international relations.
