On Friday, Beijing sharply criticized a recent U.S. State Department statement marking the 80th anniversary of the Pacific War, accusing Washington of downplaying Japan’s wartime aggression and atrocities.
Jiang Bin, spokesperson for China’s Ministry of National Defense, said the U.S. seems to suffer from “amnesia” about the history of Japanese fascist crimes, which inflicted untold suffering on peoples across the world, including Americans.
“Whitewashing Japan’s aggression and war crimes is a grave affront to historical justice, and hurts the peoples of countries once suffered from Japanese invasion,” Jiang added, urging a more accurate view of history.
This year marks 80 years since the victory over fascism and the end of World War II in the Pacific. Beijing called on the U.S. to abandon geopolitical calculations, uphold a correct historical perspective, and work with the international community to safeguard the postwar order for a more peaceful future.
For young global citizens, business leaders, thought changemakers, and travelers alike, this reminder underscores the importance of historical memory in shaping a united, peaceful world.
