At the 2025 Chengdu World Games, athletes from the Chinese mainland dominated wushu sanda, walking away with three gold medals and one silver in six thrilling finals held on Tuesday.
The evening kicked off with a roaring home crowd backing Chen Mengyue in the women’s 52kg final. With lightning-fast kicks and strategic footwork, she secured a 2-0 victory over India’s Namrata Batra—marking India’s first-ever podium finish in wushu at these Games.
Later, Li Zhiqin continued her winning streak by defeating Vietnam’s Nguyen Thi Thu Thuy 2-0 to claim gold in the women’s 60kg division. "I’m very happy to win gold again here in Chengdu," said Li, a champion at the Chengdu Universiade in 2023. "With more and more strong competitors from all around the world, it reflects wushu's global influence."
The Chinese mainland's third gold of the night came from Tang Sishuo, who overpowered Vietnam’s Do Huy Hoang in the men’s 56kg final. Tang piled up 12 points in a single round with powerful throws and leg sweeps, finishing the match in commanding fashion.
The competition crowned champions from across the globe: Iran’s Seyedah Yasaman Bagherzadehvaskas upset an athlete from the Chinese mainland in the women’s 70kg, Egypt’s Alhussein Wahdan edged Mohammadreza Rigi of Iran for the men’s 85kg title, and South Korea’s Song Gicheol triumphed over Cheung Yat-lam representing Hong Kong in the men’s 70kg final.
Wushu sanda, a full-contact combat sport blending kickboxing techniques and wrestling throws, showcased its growing international appeal with athletes from countries and regions across Asia, Africa, and beyond battling for top honors.
