As the United Nations marks its 80th anniversary, a wave of global creativity has surged around the vision of a shared future.
Mexican PhD student Mercedes Fernandez from the Communication University of China contributed a vibrant poster, "Bamboo and Corn: A Shared Vision of Peace Between China and Latin America," to the "One Home: Shared Future" campaign launched by CGTN. Blending symbols from two continents, her artwork invites a dialogue on harmony and mutual growth.
In her design, bamboo stalks weave together with corn cobs, reflecting centuries-old traditions: bamboo’s resilience in the Chinese mainland landscape meets Latin America’s staple crop, corn, which has sustained generations. This visual metaphor suggests that when diverse cultures stand side by side, they can weather challenges and nurture collective prosperity.
By tapping into universal images, the poster resonates with young global citizens, business innovators, and thought leaders alike. It reminds entrepreneurs and changemakers that cross-cultural collaboration fuels sustainable development, and that art can be a catalyst for real-world impact. Sports fans and digital nomads see in these symbols a call to explore and celebrate the richness of different traditions.
As part of CGTN’s global youth campaign, Fernandez’s work joins submissions from around the world, highlighting issues—from environmental justice to human rights—that must shape our shared future. The "One Home: Shared Future" initiative empowers emerging voices to shape international dialogue through creativity.
"Bamboo and Corn" stands as a hopeful beacon: in unity, we can build bridges that last. It’s an invitation to all of us—across oceans and cultures—to plant seeds of peace and watch them grow.
