Historical war drama Dongji Rescue stormed the Chinese mainland box office on opening day, raking in about 350Â million yuan (around $50Â million).
Directed by acclaimed filmmaker Guan Hu, the film shifts focus from grand military epics to the personal courage of ordinary fishermen who sprang into action during the 1942 Dongji Island rescue. “We wanted to tell the story from the perspective of individual lives and ordinary people,” Guan Hu said, underlining his human-centered approach.
By spotlighting mutual aid in times of crisis, Dongji Rescue brings an overlooked chapter of history to light, reminding audiences across borders that everyday heroes can change the course of events. The film’s success shows there’s strong appetite for stories that blend authentic emotion with historical insight.
