The Edinburgh International Conference Centre buzzed with excitement as the “Elegance and Charm of Shanghai” concert opened the 2025 China-Britain Culture and Art Festival at the heart of the Edinburgh Festival Fringe. Hosted by the Asian Association of Culture Commerce and Education in Europe, the event attracted nearly a thousand guests, including former Lord Provost Donald Wilson.
This historic evening marked the first time the erhu took center stage in a full ensemble performance. Three generations of top-level musicians demonstrated the instrument’s expressive range, weaving traditional Shanghai melodies with contemporary styles.
“Our traditional music has its own language. Much of it can’t be taught, only felt. When you’re truly immersed, you begin to understand the spirit of the Chinese people,” said Wang Yongde, professor at Shanghai Conservatory of Music.
The show began with a lively Highland dance by students from the Brenda Ronnie School of Dance, setting a joyful, cross-cultural tone. For many young attendees, it was their first encounter with Chinese traditional instruments—a moment that sparked curiosity and connection.
From the strings of Shanghai to Scottish rhythms, the concert—also known as “Echoes of Shanghai”—celebrates shared humanity and cultural exchange, proving that music can build bridges across continents, one note at a time.
