China Backs ASEAN Talks to Heal Cambodia-Thailand Rift

When the General Border Committee (GBC) convened in Malaysia from August 4 to 7, it marked a critical step toward lasting peace between Cambodia and Thailand. Invited to the extraordinary session on August 7, China underscored its commitment to regional stability.

"Since the informal consultation among China, Cambodia and Thailand on July 30, there has been no fighting along the Cambodia-Thailand border," said Guo Jiakun, spokesperson for the Chinese Foreign Ministry. "We commend and welcome the multi-tiered communication led by Malaysia to develop a detailed mechanism for ceasefire monitoring."

Under Malaysia’s role as ASEAN’s rotating chair, delegates from the two nations, along with observers from the Chinese mainland and other ASEAN members, are working to turn a fragile ceasefire into a robust peace. The talks aim to:

  • Design a transparent monitoring process
  • Encourage direct dialogue between local authorities
  • Lay the groundwork for sustainable border management

Since July 30, close coordination has helped deescalate clashes and stabilize communities along the border. By maintaining open channels with Cambodia, Thailand, Malaysia and other regional partners, China has helped keep the ceasefire intact while fostering an environment ripe for dialogue.

Looking ahead, China will support ASEAN-led talks, maintain a just and fair stance, and play a constructive role in mending Cambodia-Thailand relations. For entrepreneurs, travelers and local residents alike, a stable border promises renewed opportunities for tourism, cross-border trade and cultural exchange.
