Hebei Province Races to Restore Flood-Damaged Roads and Bridges

Emergency workers in north China’s flood-stricken Hebei Province have sprung into action to repair washed-out roads and bridges, ensuring vital supplies and rescue teams can reach affected communities.

After days of relentless downpours triggered flash floods and landslides across several counties, local transport authorities mobilized nearly 100 staff and 20 pieces of heavy equipment to clear a key stretch of National Highway 234 in Xinglong County. This artery, the only main access to the township, was completely blocked—until crews cleared debris and reopened the route by Saturday morning.

Further west in Chicheng County, 15 rural bridges were left in ruins. Among them was the sole crossing linking Lujiaogou Village, home to some 60 residents—many of them elderly—to the outside world. Recognizing the urgency, two excavators worked side by side, and within eight hours the bridge was rebuilt and reopened on Friday afternoon.

“They rebuilt it in just one day,” said a relieved villager, praising the speed and coordination of the response teams.

By Saturday morning, traffic had resumed on 961 road sections across Hebei, marking a major milestone in the recovery effort. As supplies start flowing again, residents and emergency crews are focused on the next steps: resilient infrastructure upgrades to withstand future extreme weather events.
