AI-Powered Underwater Robots Dive Deep in Greater Bay Area Tests

In the testing pool at the Guangdong Intelligent Robotics Institute on the Chinese mainland, a bright yellow underwater robot glides like a subaquatic sprite. Designed for complex missions beneath the waves, this AI-enabled vehicle represents a leap forward in ocean technology.

Boasting omnidirectional thrusters, the robot can move vertically, horizontally and rotate on its axis. It can also hover steadily, making it ideal for prolonged observations. Key specs include:

  • Depth rating: 400 meters
  • Max horizontal range: 1,000 meters
  • AI detection mode for real-time environmental monitoring

“Our robot tackles tasks such as underwater facility inspection and precision operations,” explains Hu Gangyi, general managing director at the company behind the project. “It overcomes the depth, duration and safety limits of traditional manual dives, boosting efficiency and operational security.”

Hu credits the Greater Bay Area’s strong industrial and financial ecosystem for fast-tracking innovation. “Local manufacturing capacity, an advanced supply chain and robust investment channels have accelerated R&D commercialization,” he says.

As ocean exploration and maintenance become ever more vital—from offshore energy to environmental monitoring—AI-driven underwater robots could redefine how we navigate and protect the deep.
