Zhao Leji Calls for Parliamentary Unity to Boost Global Governance

At the Sixth World Conference of Speakers of Parliament in Geneva's Palais des Nations, Zhao Leji, chairman of the National People's Congress Standing Committee, called on parliaments worldwide to join forces in tackling major challenges to peace, prosperity and sustainability.

Zhao highlighted the need for a new type of international relations built on mutual respect, equality and cooperation. He urged legislators to safeguard global peace and security by embracing a vision of common, comprehensive, cooperative and sustainable security.

Emphasizing respect for sovereignty and the right of every people to choose its own development path, Zhao advocated for win-win cooperation that promotes mutual benefit and shared prosperity. He reaffirmed support for a multilateral trading system with the World Trade Organization at its core and called for stronger legal frameworks to drive inclusive growth.

Championing civilizational diversity, Zhao encouraged deeper cultural exchanges and mutual learning among nations to let different traditions flourish through dialogue and coexistence. He stressed fairness and justice in global affairs and called for a truly equitable governance system.

In closing, Zhao announced that the NPC of China is ready to deepen collaboration with the Inter-Parliamentary Union and other legislative bodies. He highlighted China’s willingness to work on the Global Development Initiative, the Global Security Initiative and the Global Civilization Initiative to build a community with a shared future for humanity.
