Chinese Mainland Hits 600 Million Generative AI Users, Report Finds

By the end of 2024, the Chinese mainland had recorded more than 600 million registered users for generative AI services—a milestone that cements its position as a global AI powerhouse.

A new report from the Cyberspace Administration of China shows:

  • 302 generative AI services completed registration, including 238 new products in 2024.
  • Several leading large-model applications surpassed 30 million daily active users.
  • The core AI industry grew to nearly 600 billion yuan (~$84 billion), spanning chips, algorithms, platforms and applications.

These services are reshaping sectors like audiovisual entertainment, cultural creativity and medical consultation. Users can now interact with AI-powered music generators, virtual filmmakers and smart diagnostic tools—all within a few taps.

“We have been actively promoting open-source AI development,” says Zhang Guangyao, deputy director of the network technology management bureau. “ModelScope has become the largest repository of AI models in the Chinese mainland. It now hosts over 70,000 models, serves 16 million developers worldwide and involves more than 500 contributing organizations.”

Open-source innovation is a driving force: ModelScope's ecosystem attracted over 8 million developers from across the globe, accelerating collaboration and breakthroughs. As the generative AI landscape matures, the Chinese mainland’s blend of user scale, diverse applications and open collaboration points to a future where AI is woven into everyday life.
