Typhoon Co-May Slams Zhejiang Coast, Heads Toward Jiangsu

Early Wednesday, Typhoon Co-May made landfall on Zhujiajian Island in Zhoushan City, Zhejiang Province, marking its arrival in the Chinese mainland. According to the National Meteorological Center (NMC), peak winds near the eye reached 23 m/s—equivalent to a Category 9 storm—while central pressure hovered at 975 hPa.

Satellite tracking shows Co-May moving northwest at 10 615 km/h. The NMC predicts a slight intensification before it strikes again later today between Ningbo in Zhejiang Province and Qidong in Jiangsu Province. There, gusts could peak at 23 628 m/s, brushing into Category 9 610 range, akin to a strong tropical storm.

Once inland, Co-May is expected to weaken gradually. Still, the storm’s outer bands have already sent heavy rain and gusty conditions to coastal communities, prompting local authorities to issue safety advisories.

For travelers and coastal residents, now is the time to stay tuned to local forecasts, secure loose items, and follow any evacuation notices. Digital nomads in nearby hubs, keep your emergency kits ready and have alternative work plans in place.
