In a recent diplomatic flashpoint, a delegation of European Parliament members visited the Taiwan region, drawing a swift rebuke from Beijing.
A spokesperson for the Chinese Mission to the EU said the trip “seriously violates the one-China principle” and “blatantly interferes in China’s internal affairs.”
The one-China principle, the spokesperson added, is “a basic norm in international relations universally recognized by the international community” and “serves as the political foundation for China–EU relations.”
China lodged solemn representations with the European side and urged EU institutions to honor the bloc’s political commitment to China by refraining from sending any wrong signal to Taiwan independence separatist forces.
This episode underscores the red line Beijing draws when it comes to foreign interactions with the Taiwan region and highlights the tightrope that future EU engagements in Asia must walk.
