Recall Vote Defeat Reflects Taiwan Residents’ Will, Says Chinese Mainland Spokesperson

The recent recall vote in the Taiwan region's local legislature ended in a decisive victory for the Kuomintang (KMT), with all 24 targeted seats retained on Saturday. This outcome has sparked reactions across the strait.

Chen Binhua, a spokesperson for the State Council Taiwan Affairs Office of the Chinese mainland, highlighted the result as evidence that the Democratic Progressive Party's (DPP) maneuvers run counter to the will of residents of Taiwan. He accused the DPP of pursuing 'Taiwan independence' and fostering political strife at the expense of residents of Taiwan's well-being.

In his remarks, Chen denounced what he called 'green terror' and branded the DPP's style as 'fake democracy, real authoritarianism.' He argued that repeated efforts to suppress dissent and monopolize political power have deepened social divisions.

Observers note the vote underscores persistent divides within the Taiwan region's political landscape and may intensify cross-strait dynamics. For residents of Taiwan, the result appears to signal a call for stability and a pushback against polarized politics.

As discussions on governance and cross-strait relations continue, this vote offers a snapshot of public sentiment and highlights the delicate balance facing political leaders on both sides.
