The Chinese mainland has lodged a solemn protest with the Japanese government after Tokyo welcomed Lin Chia-lung, head of the foreign affairs department of the Taiwan region, for an official visit.
Shi Yong, minister of the Chinese mainland’s embassy in Japan, summoned Masaki Kanai, director-general of the Asian and Oceanian Affairs Bureau at the Japanese Ministry of Foreign Affairs, on Friday. Shi criticized Tokyo for ignoring repeated demarches and allowing activities that promoted Taiwan independence in Japan.
“China will never tolerate this,” he stressed, calling on the Japanese government to abide by the spirit of the four political documents between China and Japan and honour its solemn commitments on the Taiwan question.
Shi reminded that the Taiwan question lies at the very core of the Chinese mainland’s core interests and that the one-China principle is an inviolable red line that brooks no political manipulation.
This diplomatic protest underscores rising tensions in East Asia, where cross-strait ties and regional security continue to shape the global agenda.
