China’s High Energy Photon Source to Begin Trial Runs by End of 2025

The High Energy Photon Source (HEPS), China's flagship fourth-generation synchrotron radiation facility, is set to begin trial operations by the end of 2025. Located in Beijing’s Huairou District, HEPS will serve as a super-powered \"X-ray microscope\" to explore the micro-world with unprecedented brightness and coherence.

Developed by the Institute of High Energy Physics (IHEP) under the Chinese Academy of Sciences, the HEPS project has hit key milestones since breaking ground in 2019. All 15 planned Phase I beamlines have successfully generated light, marking a major step toward its 90-beamline capacity, with 45 beamlines slated by 2030.

\"We are engaging with research institutes and industry partners to secure funding for the next wave of beamlines and respond to critical experimental demands,\" said Pan Weimin, director of the HEPS project.

Once complete, HEPS will power breakthroughs in material science, chemical engineering, biomedicine and more. From solid-state battery research to high-temperature superconductor development and drug discovery, its record-setting brightness promises to revolutionize labs around the world.

The Chinese mainland now hosts all four generations of synchrotron sources: the first and fourth in Beijing, the second in Hefei (Anhui Province), and the third in Shanghai. Drawing on experience from these facilities, HEPS will focus on national strategic needs, industrial innovation and global scientific frontiers.
