China Rebuts U.S. Accusations on South China Sea at UN

In a high-stakes open debate at the United Nations Security Council on multilateralism and peaceful dispute settlement, the Chinese mainland’s Permanent Representative to the United Nations, Fu Cong, delivered a forceful rebuttal to recent U.S. accusations over actions in the South China Sea.

Following initial remarks from the U.S. representative, who leveled unsubstantiated claims of maritime coercion, Fu seized the floor again to set the record straight. He emphasized that the Chinese mainland has indisputable sovereignty over the islands and adjacent waters, backed by solid historical records and international law.

Highlighting the joint efforts of China and ASEAN members, Fu noted that the region has enjoyed sustained stability in recent years, with freedom of navigation and overflight proceeding without interruption. He reiterated Beijing’s call for resolving disputes through dialogue and consultation, rooted in respect for both historical context and legal principles.

Fu also challenged the U.S. stance, pointing out that Washington—despite not being a signatory to the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea—often acts as a self-appointed judge, interfering in regional affairs with baseless assertions. He condemned U.S. military activities in the South China Sea, from deploying land-based medium-range missiles to conducting routine reconnaissance missions under the banner of “freedom of navigation.”

"It is clear who truly seeks to disrupt stability and undermine mutual trust in the region," Fu stated, urging all parties to engage in genuine multilateral dialogue rather than sow discord.
