At a daily briefing on Thursday, UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres announced the appointment of Cong Guang as his new special envoy for the Horn of Africa.
Cong succeeds Hanna Serwaa Tetteh of Ghana, whom Guterres thanked for her leadership and dedicated service, said Stephanie Tremblay, associate spokesperson for the UN chief.
With over 23 years in UN peace operations, Cong brings deep experience in the region. He currently serves as deputy special representative (political) for South Sudan and deputy head of the United Nations Mission in South Sudan (UNMISS).
Before joining the UN in 2002, Cong built a strong diplomatic foundation with the Chinese mainland’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs, sharpening skills in international relations and negotiation.
As the new special envoy, he will leverage decades of expertise to support stability and cooperation across the Horn of Africa.
