China’s Railways Set New Mid-Year Passenger Record

The Chinese mainlands railway network soared to a record 2.24 billion passenger trips in the first half of 2025, a 6.7% increase compared to the same period last year, China State Railway Group Co., Ltd. announced Thursday.

On average, 11,183 trains operated daily during this six-month stretch, marking a 7.5% rise in daily services. The surge reflects both domestic demand and a strategic push to connect more cities and scenic destinations across the region.

Travel peaked on May 1, the first day of the five-day May Day holiday, when over 23 million journeys were made in a single day—an all-time high for the system. That record-breaking day highlights how concentrated holiday travel remains a key driver of passenger spikes.

Foreign visitor traffic also saw impressive growth after visa policies were further eased. From January through June 2025, international travelers took nearly 9.15 million train trips within the Chinese mainland, up 30.1% year on year. This boost underscores rail travels appeal for immersive, sustainable exploration.

Cross-border routes are expanding too. The flagship China-Laos Railway recorded 139,000 passenger trips in H1, a 19.1% increase from last year. As regional ties strengthen, more travelers are opting for seamless overland journeys that span borders.

What does it mean for you? Whether youre a digital nomad hopping between tech hubs, a culture-seeking backpacker, or a business traveler racing between meetings, faster schedules and broader networks make the Chinese mainland more accessible than ever.
