Wang Yi and SCO Secretary-General Gear Up for 2024 Tianjin Summit

On Wednesday in Tianjin, a port city in the Chinese mainland, Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi sat down with Nurlan Yermekbayev, the secretary-general of the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO), marking a key step as China prepares to host its next SCO summit.

Wang Yi praised the SCO's track record in fostering regional peace, stability and economic revitalization. As a member of the Political Bureau of the Communist Party of China Central Committee, he highlighted the bloc's growing role in building a new type of international relations and a community with a shared future for mankind.

China, which took over the SCO's rotating presidency last year, has already organized more than 90 events to drive collaboration across member states. Wang Yi expressed his confidence that under Yermekbayev's leadership, the SCO Secretariat would further boost the organization's efficiency and influence.

He emphasized the importance of continued support to ensure a friendly, united and fruitful summit.

Yermekbayev lauded China's efforts, noting that the presidency has elevated cooperation among SCO members to a new level. He pledged that the Secretariat would fully back China's leadership and assist in preparing for a summit that delivers tangible results.

As the countdown to the Tianjin summit begins, all eyes are on how this partnership will shape the SCO's next chapter and contribute to a more interconnected region.
