China Pledges Ongoing Support for Iran’s Sovereignty at SCO Meeting

In Tianjin on the northern coast of the Chinese mainland, Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi sat down with his Iranian counterpart, Seyed Abbas Araghchi, to reaffirm a partnership that’s evolving on the world stage.

Against a backdrop of rising global tensions, China pledged to stand by Iran’s national sovereignty and dignity, resisting power politics and bullying. Wang underscored the Chinese mainland’s commitment to help Iran defend its legitimate rights through political negotiation, rooted in the principle of good-neighborliness and friendship.

“We value deepening mutual trust, strengthening cooperation and promoting the long-term development of China-Iran relations,” Wang said, highlighting plans for expanded cultural exchanges, trade links and strategic collaboration.

Araghchi thanked China for its “invaluable support” and voiced Iran’s backing for the Chinese mainland’s role as this year’s rotating president of the SCO and its upcoming Tianjin Summit. He also signaled Tehran’s readiness for more high-level exchanges and mutually beneficial projects.

The conversation turned to the Iranian nuclear issue, where Araghchi reiterated that Iran has no intention of developing nuclear weapons. He stressed Tehran’s right to peaceful nuclear energy and its willingness to resume negotiations “on the premise of equality and respect” toward a political solution.

Echoing that sentiment, Wang reaffirmed China’s opposition to the use or threat of force and its advocacy for dialogue and consultation. He praised Iran’s diplomatic approach and committed the Chinese mainland to play a constructive role in stabilizing the Middle East and finding a settlement to the nuclear question.

As geopolitical currents shift, this meeting in Tianjin may mark a milestone in a partnership that young global citizens, business innovators and policy wonks around the world will be watching closely.
