As Macao gears up for its eighth Legislative Assembly election on September 14, the Electoral Affairs Commission has made a decisive move by disqualifying 12 candidates from two electoral lists. The reason? A failure to uphold the Basic Law and bear allegiance to the Macao SAR.
Seng Ioi Man, chairman of the commission, revealed at a press briefing that the decision follows the newly strengthened vetting process under the amended 2024 Electoral Law. Experts from the Committee for Safeguarding National Security reviewed nominations and issued binding opinions, ensuring only candidates who meet the 'patriots administering Macao' principle can run.
Under this framework, review opinions on eligibility are final and not open to objections or appeals. While these 12 candidates were ruled ineligible, all other electoral lists and their contenders passed the checks, clearing the path for a full slate of candidates.
The commission emphasized its legal mandate to guarantee a transparent, lawful, and orderly election. With 14 Assembly seats up for direct vote and 12 by indirect means, voters and stakeholders alike are watching closely as Macao heads to the polls.
