China Pledges Strong Partnership with Cambodia Amid Global Turbulence

At the sidelines of the China-ASEAN Foreign Ministers' Meeting in Kuala Lumpur, Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi delivered a clear message: in today's volatile global climate, China stands ready to be Cambodia's trustworthy friend and partner.

Meeting with Prak Sokhonn, Cambodia's deputy prime minister and foreign minister, Wang highlighted Beijing's zero-tariff policy covering 100 percent of tariff lines for Cambodian exports—a gesture that contrasts sharply with the U.S. imposition of a 36 percent tariff hike on Cambodian goods. "We want to empower Cambodia's growth," Wang said, underlining China's focus on mutual benefit.

Both ministers also pledged to tackle cross-border challenges. They outlined plans to step up collaboration to stamp out online gambling, telecom fraud, counterfeit production and smuggling—threats that, if left unchecked, could undermine the safety and prosperity of communities on both sides.

The talks extended to regional stability. Wang was briefed on tensions along the Cambodia-Thailand border. Acknowledging differences in perspectives, he praised both sides for their willingness to de-escalate and manage the situation. "As inseparable neighbors, Cambodia and Thailand share the spirit of harmony and goodwill," he noted. "China will maintain an impartial stance and play a constructive role in finding solutions."

Prak Sokhonn voiced appreciation for China's support. "The zero-tariff treatment for our exports is a true gesture of friendship and brotherhood," he said, emphasizing that Cambodia remains open to negotiating with the U.S. to resolve disputes without sacrificing its principles or the interests of its partners.

As global pressures mount, this Sino-Cambodian partnership sets an example of strategic cooperation—blending economic support, security measures and diplomatic engagement to navigate an unpredictable world.
