Mayors Unite in Tianjin for SCO Summit on Urban Collaboration

The Global Mayors Dialogue \u00096 SCO Summit Cities kicked off in Tianjin in the Chinese mainland on Tuesday, bringing together around 350 mayors, urban planners and thought leaders to explore new frontiers in city cooperation. Under themes of openness, inclusiveness and integrated development, participants mapped out strategies to drive economic, social and environmental progress across Shanghai Cooperation Organization member states.

Representatives from the Chinese mainland, Russia, Kazakhstan, Tajikistan, Kyrgyzstan, Uzbekistan and other delegations joined experts, scholars and media professionals for high-energy sessions on:

  • Connectivity: Strengthening transport and logistics networks to reduce trade barriers.
  • Trade & Investment: Fostering cross-border partnerships and smart financing models.
  • Green Development: Scaling up renewable energy, urban forestation and low-carbon policies.
  • People-to-People Exchanges: Promoting cultural tourism, educational programs and digital cultural platforms.

Janesh Kain, deputy secretary-general of the SCO Secretariat, underscored that "urban cooperation is key to ecological protection, digital transformation and integrated transportation." His remarks set the tone for discussions on how cities can harness technology, sustainable planning and cultural ties to boost resilience and prosperity.

Building on data-driven insights and case studies from across the region, attendees will work in thematic workshops to draft pilot initiatives. Highlights include smart transit corridors linking Central Asia to coastal hubs and joint green finance programs aimed at supporting emerging urban startups.

As the dialogue unfolds, mayors and city experts are expected to finalize a roadmap for ongoing collaboration, setting measurable goals in areas such as carbon reduction, digital inclusion and tourism growth. The outcomes could reshape the urban landscape of SCO cities and influence broader global strategies for sustainable development.

Stay tuned for our follow-up coverage as the Global Mayors Dialogue drives concrete action toward more connected, inclusive and green cities across the SCO network.
