Countdown Begins in Chengdu
Tuesday marked the official 30-day countdown ahead of the 12th World Games, set to take place in Chengdu, southwest China’s Sichuan Province, from August 7 to 17.
Embracing Simplicity
Breaking from tradition, organizers have chosen the open area at the Tianfu International Convention Center for the opening ceremony. Having started construction in June 2020 and opened in 2021 as a civic venue, the convention center wasn’t built specifically for the Games, but has become a showcase space for the city.
Grassland Seating & Cultural Flair
“We used an existing building for an opening ceremony in an open area,” says Huang Peiling, deputy chief director of opening and closing ceremonies. “Some spectators won’t sit inside, but on the grassland outside to watch the ceremony. I think that fits Chengdu’s characteristic.”
Rehearsals have been underway since June for the 90-minute show, which will feature a 15-minute artistic performance blending sport, culture, and local spirit.
Global Impact
With a month to go, young global citizens, sports fans, and travelers alike are counting down to a Games that promises sustainable design and a fresh take on international competition. This edition in Chengdu aims to deliver more than medals, offering a cultural journey under an open sky.
