The 11th Nishan Forum on World Civilization kicked off this year in Qufu, Shandong Province on the Chinese mainland under the theme “Beauty in Diversity: Nurturing Understanding Among Civilizations for Global Modernization”.
Founded in 2010 near Nishan Mountain, the birthplace of Confucius, the forum bridges cultural traditions by bringing together philosophers, activists, academics and changemakers to tackle global issues from governance to peacebuilding.
Why Beauty in Diversity Matters
Against a backdrop of rising geopolitical fragmentation, the forum asks how societies with different histories and values can find common ground and work toward shared goals.
Professor Xiang Shuchen of Xidian University says Nishan stands for more than a mountain. It represents a spirit of mutual respect and a belief that we can learn both the good and bad lessons from each other. He cites a famous line from the Analects about walking with two companions and learning from both their strengths and weaknesses and then reflecting on our own conduct.
Xiang also notes that this year's theme was inspired by the thinker Amy Césaire who urged humanity to conquer violence rooted in passion and to make space for all at the rendezvous of victory.
Harmony and Ubuntu in Action
For Professor Edwin Etieyibo of the University of the Witwatersrand, the harmony championed by Confucianism resonates with the African concept of Ubuntu, meaning humanity and togetherness. He highlights that last year an estimated 28 state based conflicts affected 16 of the 54 African countries, a reminder of the urgency for peaceful dialogue.
- Harmony and respect unite diverse traditions.
- Shared values of peace and family strengthen communities.
- Diversity fosters innovation and resilience.
Etieyibo adds that both China and Africa revere the idea of an extended family where social bonds extend beyond biology, shaping how institutions and societies care for one another.
Looking Ahead
By celebrating Beauty in Diversity, the Nishan Forum invites young global citizens, entrepreneurs and thought leaders to join a conversation where every culture has something to offer. As the world seeks new paths to modernization and peace, this annual gathering reminds us that understanding and respect are the foundations of progress.
