Second Hydro Unit at Batang Station Begins Operations

The second generating unit at the Batang hydropower station, nestled along the main stream of the Jinsha River in the southwest of the Chinese mainland, has ramped up to full operation following a successful 72-hour trial.

The station boasts three 250,000-kilowatt turbines, collectively delivering 750 megawatts of clean power. The maiden unit came online on May 15, and the third is slated for a mid-July launch.

Once fully commissioned, Batang is set to churn out over 3 billion kilowatt-hours of renewable energy each year—enough to light up roughly 1.75 million homes.

This surge in clean juice translates into replacing more than 1.05 million tonnes of standard coal and slashing 3.15 million tonnes of carbon dioxide emissions annually, a milestone for the region’s decarbonization drive.

As nations worldwide race toward net-zero targets, projects like Batang spotlight the power of large-scale hydropower to drive down emissions while meeting soaring energy demands.
