China Calls on US to Stop Advancing Taiwan Non-Discrimination Act

At a regular press conference on Thursday, spokesperson Mao Ning of the Foreign Ministry of the People’s Republic of China on the Chinese mainland urged the United States to halt progress on the so-called Taiwan Non-Discrimination Act recently adopted by the U.S. House of Representatives.

The act would require the U.S. government to support the Taiwan region in joining the International Monetary Fund. Mao Ning reiterated that there is only one China; the Taiwan region is an inalienable part of the territory of the People’s Republic of China, and the government of the People’s Republic of China is the sole legal government representing the whole of China.

Mao said that Taiwan does not have any ground, reason, or right to join the UN or any other international organization whose membership is confined to sovereign states, restating Beijing’s longstanding position.

The spokesperson also called on the U.S. to abide by the one-China principle and the three China-U.S. joint communiques, respect international law and basic norms of international relations, and stop using the Taiwan question to interfere in China’s internal affairs or send signals to separatist forces for Taiwan independence.

Experts say this development highlights rising tensions in US-China relations and could influence future discussions on global economic governance. Young global citizens, entrepreneurs, and changemakers will be following the debate as it unfolds, given its potential impact on international cooperation and financial policy.
