At a recent press briefing, Chen Binhua, spokesperson for the Taiwan Affairs Office of the State Council, lashed out at Taiwan regional leader Lai Ching-te’s push for "Taiwan independence," calling it the "greatest disaster to the island."
Chen’s remarks came in response to Lai’s "10 lectures on unity," where the leader of the Taiwan region outlined plans to rely on foreign support and, if necessary, military measures to secure independence.
According to the mainland spokesperson, Lai’s stance runs counter to the island of Taiwan’s mainstream appetite for peace and development, recklessly placing Taiwan people’s safety and well-being at risk and disrupting stability across the Taiwan Strait.
Labeling Lai "a peace destroyer," "a thorough war monger," and "a notorious troublemaker," Chen accused him of deliberately stoking cross-strait antagonism. He warned that the so-called fight for Taiwan, Penghu, Kinmen and Mazu serves only the Democratic Progressive Party’s interests and drags young people into harm’s way.
Chen Binhua further accused Lai of fear-mongering about a mainland military threat to disguise his separatist agenda and of openly seeking external interference from democratic countries for protection fees and political leverage.
Reaffirming that the two sides belong to one China and that Taiwan, Penghu, Kinmen and Mazu are part of China’s sacred territory, Chen stressed that only by firmly opposing "Taiwan independence" separatism can genuine peace and security across the Taiwan Strait be ensured.
“The deeper Lai delves into ‘seeking independence,’ the more he harms Taiwan,” the spokesperson stated, underscoring the mainland’s determination to safeguard national sovereignty and territorial integrity and to crush all separatist plots.
Chen concluded by appealing to residents of Taiwan to view the issue through the lens of national interests and personal well-being, urging unity to preserve cross-strait peace and stability.
