Shanghai Shenhua traveled to Changchun, in Jilin Province on the Chinese mainland, and clinched a thrilling 2-1 win over Changchun Yatai on Sunday. This victory propels Shenhua to the top of the CSL standings, albeit having played one extra match.
The breakthrough came in the 32nd minute when Gao Tianyi delivered a pinpoint corner that Zhu Chenjie powered home. Just eight minutes later, Andre Luis slipped a perfect through ball to Joao Teixeira, who calmly slotted the ball into the bottom right corner to double the advantage.
Yatai fought back early in the second half as Tan Long headed in a cross from Zhao Yingjie in the 53rd minute. The hosts mounted a string of attacks, but Shenhua’s defense held firm to secure the win.
With 38 points from 16 games, Shenhua sit three points clear of second-placed Beijing Guoan, who have a game in hand. Guoan will face Yunnan Yukun on Monday before the two title rivals meet at Workers Stadium on July 19. However, Andre Luis will miss that showdown after a yellow card against Yatai triggered an automatic suspension.
As the title race heats up, all eyes will be on the upcoming derby in Beijing, where both clubs will look to seize control of the championship fight.
