In a new milestone for Greater Bay Area connectivity, over 2.85 million northbound trips by single-plated vehicles from the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region (SAR) have crossed into the Chinese mainland via the Hong Kong-Zhuhai-Macao Bridge as of 9 a.m. on Monday.
Launched in July 2023, the 'northbound travel for Hong Kong vehicles' scheme allows cars registered only in the Hong Kong SAR to ferry drivers across the border for work, leisure and tourism. Since its rollout, more than 108,000 vehicles and 129,000 drivers have completed the required border inspection registration.
Usage is surging: from January to now, over 3.27 million passenger vehicles have passed through Zhuhai Portโa roughly 30 percent year-on-year jump. On busy weekends and holidays, daily traffic peaks at about 21,000 vehicles, with Hong Kong single-plated cars making up over 40 percent of the flow.
Back in early 2023, before the scheme, the bridge saw roughly 7,000 daily crossings. That figure climbed to 18,000 in 2025โa boost of more than 150 percent compared to the same period two years earlier.
For entrepreneurs, commuters and adventure seekers alike, the bridge is more than an engineering marvel: it's a gateway to new markets, cultural exchanges and sustainable tourism across the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area. As cross-border ties deepen, young global citizens can expect smoother journeys and fresh opportunities on both sides of the border.
