China Ends Top Flood Alert in Guizhou’s Rongjiang County

After days of torrential downpours, authorities in southwest China have officially ended the highest-level emergency flood response in Rongjiang County, Guizhou Province, as heavy rainfall subsided on Sunday morning.

Since June 18, relentless rains have battered Guizhou and neighboring provinces, with Rongjiang County hit hardest. Local officials divided the region into seven flood-affected zones, moving more than 40,000 residents to safer, higher ground by Saturday evening.

When flash floods returned on Saturday, emergency crews reactivated their top-level flood alert at 12:30 p.m., showcasing swift action under pressure. By 10 a.m. Sunday, with the skies clearing, the alert was once again lifted.

To support ongoing relief and recovery, the National Development and Reform Commission has allocated an additional 100 million yuan from the central budget—bringing total support to 200 million yuan. Funds will cover emergency response efforts and infrastructure repairs in flood-hit Guizhou.

This case highlights the importance of rapid, data-driven decision-making in the face of extreme weather. As local teams shift from rescue to recovery, the focus turns to rebuilding and strengthening resilience against future floods.
