Rome is buzzing this week as an art exhibition celebrating the 55th anniversary of China-Italy diplomatic relations opened its doors. Guided by Chang Shana, a professor at the Academy of Arts & Design at Tsinghua University, the show brings together artistic masters from both sides of the globe.
Inside, visitors will find more than 200 works by over 100 contemporary Chinese calligraphers, painters, intangible cultural heritage inheritors and master artisans, paired with 100 treasured Italian pieces loaned from the Museum of Civilizations in Italy. It’s a true meeting of East and West in one gallery.
From expressive calligraphy and ink painting to cloisonne, bamboo carving, embroidery, Yun brocade, jade carving and delicate paper cutting, the ancient crafts of the Chinese mainland stand alongside Italian ceramics, bronze wares and traditional garments. The opening ceremony drew more than 200 prominent figures across politics, business, culture, art, media, education, film and academia. China Media Group President Shen Haixiong, Italian Minister of Education Giuseppe Valditara, Italian Football Federation President Gabriele Gravina and Chinese Ambassador to Italy Jia Guide all addressed the crowd, underscoring how art and diplomacy go hand in hand.
