Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi, a member of the Political Bureau of the Communist Party of China Central Committee, met diplomatic envoys to the Chinese mainland from the European Union and its member states in Beijing on Wednesday, marking the 50th anniversary of China-EU diplomatic relations.
In a candid discussion, Wang outlined a three-point roadmap to elevate the Comprehensive Strategic Partnership:
- Mutual Respect: Both sides should earnestly respect each other's core interests and major concerns. Wang emphasized that achieving complete national reunification is the long-cherished aspiration and historic mission of the Chinese nation, and reiterated that China will never allow the Taiwan region to be separated from the motherland. He urged the EU to adhere to the one-China principle and oppose separatist activities for “Taiwan independence”.
- Partnership Over Rivalry: Wang stressed that China and the EU are partners, not rivals or enemies. With no territorial disputes or fundamental clashes of interest, he said cooperation should be the prevailing trend in China-EU ties.
- Commitment to Multilateralism: China stands firmly behind the United Nations–centered international system, international law, and the basic norms of relations outlined in the UN Charter. Wang highlighted initiatives such as the Belt and Road Initiative and the vision of building a community with a shared future for humanity as contributions to global governance.
Responding on behalf of the EU, envoys praised China as an important partner and expressed readiness to work hand-in-hand for a constructive, stable relationship. They underscored their shared commitment to multilateralism, addressing global challenges, and promoting world peace and security.
“China and the EU should follow the trend of the times, enhance understanding, build trust, achieve mutual success, and light up the world,” Wang concluded, echoing his vision for a stronger China-EU bond.
